Spaying & Neutering

Spaying or neutering your pets can have many benefits. Not only do these procedures eradicate undesirable behaviors such as humping, fighting, and roaming, but they can also prevent prostate issues and testicular cancers. If done at the right age, spaying or neutering can also protect your pet from mammary cancers and pyometra, a uterine infection, which can be life-threatening. These procedures can also help keep dogs and cats out of shelters as they help reduce overpopulation.

Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that require a pet to go under general anesthesia. Anesthesia is generally quite safe, but we at Manassas Animal Hospital recommend a physical examination and blood work to be done before surgical procedures to minimize risk. This allows us to know about any underlying health problems your pet may have and reduce the risk of complications during surgery. A specific anesthetic protocol that includes monitoring vital signs during the spaying or neutering procedures is also followed by our staff to ensure the safety of your pet.

At Manassas Animal Hospital, we recommend that every pet have an ovariohysterectomy (spaying) or orchidectomy (neutering) procedure done as soon as our veterinarians recommend it. We take into account many variables which determine when the procedure should be done on your pet, such as their breed, size, temperament, and lifestyle.
